4 Steps To Tackle Scratches On Bamboo Flooring For A Refreshed Finish
Posted on: 2 August 2018
Bamboo floors are stunning in any home, but they can sometimes start to look timeworn because of skid marks, scratches and other blemishes. The good news is that you can repair these imperfections without too much difficulty. Here are some steps to help you tackle scratches on bamboo floors for a refreshed finish:
Bring Together Tools You Need For The Job
For this task, you will need masking tape, wood putty, fine-grit sandpaper, damp paper towels and a timber coating. When looking for wood putty, make sure you choose a shade that is as close as possible to your existing floors for a unified finish. A putty colour that is close to your floors will be less noticeable and can be purchased from any home improvement store.
Wipe The Floor Next To The Scratches
Your next step is to use the damp paper towels to wipe the floor surrounding the scratches. This will remove any scuff marks or additional dirt to unveil any more scratches if they are present. Inspect the area watchfully to ensure you don't miss any scratches. You can mark them with white chalk if you want to make sure you don't miss any. Let the floor dry completely once you have wiped it down. Use masking tape to surround the scratches and keep other areas protected while you're filling them out. Make sure the scratches remain easily accessible when placing the masking tape around them.
Fill The Scratched Areas With Wood Putty
After the masking tape, you now have to fill the scratched areas with wood putty. Apply a small amount at a time to each scratch, making sure you follow the manufacturer's usage instructions for the best results. Remove any excess putty from around the scratches using a damp paper towel for a neater finish. Wait for the putty to dry completely.
Sand The Putty And Apply A Timber Coating
Your next task is to sand down the putty using fine-grit sandpaper to avoid gouging the floor and to create a smoothly finished surface. Keep in mind that the putty should have dried at floor level or slightly above floor level to be able to smooth out the surface. If it sinks below floor level, then you will need to apply more putty and dry it before sanding. Next, remove the masking tape and apply the timber coating to give the floor a refreshed finish. Let the coating dry before letting anyone use the floor.
These steps will help restore the flawless look of your bamboo flooring in no time.
